All gardeners know, spectacular spring gardens start with planning and planting months in advance of the new year’s first bloom. February’s cheery snowdrops and April’s elegant tulips begin as bulbs planted in late October and early November.
So if you’re thinking that some sunny daffodils or deep blue Spring Starflowers might be just the thing to transform your garden in 2017, mark your calendar for Saturday, October 15, when the Swarthmore Horticultural Society (SHS) will be selling an impressive assortment of spring-blooming bulbs. All bulbs on sale have been selected by SHS experts for their beauty and reliability.
This year’s sale features 13 unusual varieties of bulbs, including an extraordinary new tulip – “Blue Wow”—that lives up to its name with dramatic peony-like blossoms. By popular demand, SHS is also offering the Allium schubertii, the striking sparkler that appears in the SHS logo. All spring-flowering bulbs are easy to grow, and they provide year after year of blossoms.
The SHS sale is open to the public from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, at the Swarthmore Farmers Market at the Borough Hall parking lot.
SHS is an all-volunteer organization that plants and maintains many of the public gardens of the Town Center as well as Gateway Park. All proceeds of the bulb sale will be used to enhance and sustain SHS public gardens.
