Beginning Friday, September 15, the Players Club of Swarthmore serves up a spicy slice of life on the other side of the bars in the Kander & Ebb classic musical Chicago.
Chicago is a big, bawdy show set in the roaring 20s, with bad broads behaving badly in their Cook County clink. Rivals Velma and Roxie, murderers both, scheme and connive to turn their stay on Death Row into a media circus. As they become worldwide celebrities, they crack wise, sing some of Broadway’s most enduring show tunes, and dance in the provocative, sensual tradition of original choreographer Bob Fosse.
Director Anne Marie Scalies brings out stellar performances from leads Gabriella Bressi and Liz Iannacci, as well as Kat Lemon (as prison matron Mama Morton), Mark Thompson (as sharpie lawyer Billy Flynn), and an ensemble totaling two dozen actors. Choreography is by Katie Sienkiewicz and Nate Golden, and Emily Szan is musical director.
Opening night is tonight (September 15) at 8 p.m. on the Players Club’s main stage at 614 Fairview Road in Swarthmore. Performances will be Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., through September 30.
