Swarthmore Police Report
Swarthmore Police Chief Brian Craig provided information on several disturbing incidents in the borough over the past week. Excerpts of the report are below:
On Saturday, October 29, at approximately 5:28 p.m., a female was walking on the shoulder of the roadway in the 200 block of College Avenue, when she heard a group of juveniles on bicycles approach from behind. As the group passed by her she was struck on the back of the head with an unknown object and fell to the ground. The victim gave a description of four males riding three bicycles as well as additional information.
Officer Aloi later spotted a group matching the description on the 200 block of Park Avenue. The bikers fled, but Officer Aloi was able to apprehend one of the them. This male provided names of the others in the group.
Subsequently, Officer Aloi was contacted by Ridley Township police who reported a bicycle theft from the Wawa on Fairview Road. Another bicycle theft was reported in Swarthmore. All these incidents appear to be related. The investigation is continuing.
Minutes later at 5:35 p.m., two juveniles were in the 200 block of Park Avenue when they were approached by a group of four male juveniles. One of the four asked if he could ride the bikes of the two juveniles. Before they could respond one of the bicycles was taken and the four juveniles rode off.
Subsequent investigation indicated this incident involved the same group of males identified in the assault in the 200 block of College Avenue. The offending juveniles have been identified. Officer Aloi is conducting an ongoing investigation.
Later that night, in the wee hours of Sunday, at approximately 1 a.m., Officer Kline responded to the intersection of College Avenue and N. Chester Road to assist Swarthmore College public safety officers.
When Officer Kline arrived, the public safety officers had a male in custody. The investigation revealed the male was drunk and disorderly, and had assaulted one of the public safety officers. The male was taken into custody and charged with assault and other various offenses.
