Some of the 1,000 lap swimmers at Rose Valley Swim & Tennis Club gathered on Labor Day to celebrate one another, and to remember Dr. Rick Beeman, a longtime Rose Valley 1,000 club member who died last week. For 2016, the club’s 90th summer of operation, 35 members completed 1,000 laps in the 30-yard pool, led by Joan Stankiewicz with 6,090 and Tim Plummer with 4,062. Ten year-old Casey Conway and 11 year-old Georgia Gianopulos were the youngest among the group. Geoff Galgon, a member of Strath Haven High School Class of 2005, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in Set Theory last month at the University of California, Irvine. The title of his paper is “Trees, Refining, and Combinatorial Characteristics.” Geoff is an honors graduate of the California Institute of Technology, with degrees in mathematics and economics. He is the son of Gerry Galgon and Florence Ann Roberts, both of Swarthmore.

Hannah Bech of Swarthmore graduated summa cum laude from Augsburg College with a BA in sociology last April. Hannah also received the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership award, and was an active member of Students for Racial Justice and the Augsburg choir.

Singers Heidi Starr, Linda Tripolitis and Deborah Snow make up the trio, Divas a la Carte; known for their beautifully layered harmonies. Repertoire features classics such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Mr. Sandman,” “Bei Mir Bist Du Schön” and original arrangements. Two local concerts are scheduled for next week: Glen Providence Park in Media on Saturday, September 10, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Rain date: Sunday, September 11.) The event is free, but bring some lawn chairs. Fellini Cafe in Media on Monday, September 12, at 6:30 p.m. The $70 per person ticket includes the concert, a 5-course meal, and tax and gratuity.
