Ethan Schwartz Gets Hearts Pumping

Seven year-old Ethan Schwartz is neither a walker nor a runner, but he’ll be the leader of the pack in a road race in a couple of weeks. Ethan, a student at the George C. Crothers Memorial School at CADES in Swarthmore, will be joined on Sunday, October 8, by family, friends, and sporty supporters who will hit the road in the 5th Annual Ethan’s Heart Journey 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk fun walk in Pottstown’s River Front Park.

Ethan was born with a congenital heart defect, and suffered a cardiac arrest which led to a severe anoxic brain injury. He has since been wheelchair bound with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Three days a week, he travels from his Gilbertsville home to CADES, where his many “amazing and wonderful” helpers and friends have immeasurably enriched his life, according to mom Martrese Schwartz.

Fans of Ethan and CADES are invited to register for the events and/or make donations at runccrs.com. This year the proceeds will not only help ease the financial burden for Ethan’s extensive care, but also fund adaptive technology, providing mobility to the wonderful children and adults who attend CADES.

Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m., the 5K goes off at 8:30, and the one-miler begins at 10 a.m., following 5K awards and raffles.
