On Wednesday, September 13, at 2:04 p.m., Swarthmore firefighters responded to a call for an “auto accident with entrapment” at 800 Yale Avenue in the Borough. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that a motorist traveling down Rose Valley Road had lost control of his vehicle and struck a Wallingford-Swarthmore School District bus head-on.
The location of the accident was the Yale Avenue bridge. The bus was proceeding from Swarthmore back to the middle school on Copples Lane. The striking vehicle was proceeding down the Rose Valley Road hill towards the Yale Avenue bridge. Due to the wet road and excessive speed, the motorist was unable to negotiate the turns, and lost control of his vehicle striking the bus.
The bus driver, noticing the automobile traveling towards him at a high rate of speed, had stopped his bus when struck. Damages to the bus were minimal, however the striking vehicle required towing. Fortunately, there were no children on the bus at the time of the accident. Both drivers were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
