Picture Book City Opens at SPL

5-12 picture book city

Swarthmore Public Library has cut the ribbon on “Picture Book City.” In an example of creative urban planning, librarians at SPL have rethought the organization of picture books in the children’s library. Instead of shelving books by author’s name, SPL has made browsing more intuitive for young clients, creating neighborhoods grouped by subject and identified by color.

Bedtime stories, for example, are in the light blue neighborhood, while holiday books are in the pink, and ABCs and number concept books are themed yellow.

Library director Amber Osborne said, “We hope this will make children feel more capable and independent when finding books in the library.” Children’s books for older readers remain downstairs, grouped by topic with adult books.
