Stanley of Swarthmore and Swarthmore Public Library children’s programmer Scott Schumacher get a head start on the library’s summer reading theme “Building a Better World.”

The sun is about to rise on kids’ activities and programs at the Swarthmore Public Library, according to Scott Schumacher, the new children’s programmer at SPL. As soon as school is out, the library is the in place to be.

There are many choices for children of all ages, but for readers, the best first step is probably to join the Summer Reading Club. Sign up online at swarthmorepubliclibrary.org/blog, or register at the library and take out some books while you’re there. Keep track of your reading, and each week, bring in your reading log, and take a spin of the Prize Wheel to see what you’ve won.

Throughout the summer, Schumacher says, a Weekly Mission awaits intrepid young readers and doers: “Every Monday starting June 19, check our Facebook page or come to the library to see what the mission for the week is. Children who complete at least 6 of the 8 missions will be invited to an August ice cream party in Little Crum Creek Park!”

Wonderful Wednesdays will bring magical storytellers and performers to the Central Park Amphitheater right in front of the library for all-ages. Shows are on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

PAWS animals are looking forward to summer, too. In the cool of the library for two Thursday evenings each month, teams of handlers and PAWS therapy dogs will visit to listen to kindergarten-and-up children as they practice reading a book of their choice to a calm, encouraging companion. Appointments are needed; go through the SPL website.

Summer Storytimes offer creative, structured reading and sharing sessions in six age groups at various times during the week. Schumacher says parents or caregivers should accompany younger children. The schedule:

Infants Only: 9:30 a.m. Thursdays (birth-12 months)
Wee Read: 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays (ages 1-2)
Toddler Tales: 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mondays; 10:30 a.m. Thursdays (ages 2-3 ½ )
Preschool Storytime: 2 p.m. Tuesdays; 1 p.m. Wednesdays (ages 3½ -5)
Creative Kids: 4:15 p.m. Mondays (ages 5-7)
Book Club: 4:15 p.m. Thursdays (ages 8-11)

The summer session will begin the week of June 19 and end the week of August 7. To register for most programs, go to swarthmorepubliclibrary.org/blog. (Registration for storytimes will begin on June 13 at 7:30 a.m.)
