Susan George Hatzell Warren, surrounded by family who loved her very much, passed away peacefully at Davis Hospital in Utah on July 3, 2018.
Born in Philadelphia on February 14, 1947 to the late Robert and Jane Gallagher George, she earned degrees in both nursing and Renaissance and Medieval literature (B.A. from Neumann and M.A. from Villanova). Sue traveled extensively, taught English in Estonia, was a senior lecturer at Widener University, volunteered at Bartram Gardens, and ran a successful framing studio in Swarthmore. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore.
After settling nine years ago in Syracuse, Utah, she became a beloved senior warden at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, and president of the Syracuse Museum. A lifelong lover of theater, Sue’s favorite institution was the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
A skilled culinary artist and devoted matriarch, she is survived by her daughter Lara Finley and her husband Robert, her son Isaac Hatzell and his wife Marj, and her son Benjamin Warren and his fiancée Ramona; her brother Ken George and his wife Lee; along with her three beloved grandchildren, Luke and Ian Hatzell, and Ethan Finley.
A service was held July 6, 2018 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Utah. A service will be planned in Pennsylvania in the fall.
