Ed Koons of Moylan was honored recently by the Delaware County Literacy Council with DCLC’s 2016 Helen B. Simyak Tutor of the Year award. Ed provides math tutoring to students enrolled in a GED preparation class led by GED instructor Ann Gilligan, who presented the award, saying, “Ed has been instrumental in students’ passing the math section of the GED, with an almost 100% success rate!” A retired actuary, Ed takes great pride in encouraging DCLC’s adult students and challenging them with problems and exercises tailored to their skill levels and goals.

Prior to a recent meeting of Swarthmore Town Center, Swarthmore Farmers Market manager Andy Rosen (left) accepted a check for $5,000 from Sharon Mester on behalf of the Swarthmore Centennial Foundation. Town Center director Marty Spiegel joined them in front of the work in progress at the Central Park, whose parking lot will be the site of nearly six months of weekly market days on Saturdays beginning May 14. The Centennial Foundation’s donation will fund increased involvement of performers and artists to entertain young and not-so-young shoppers at this year’s markets.

On Friday, April 8, two violinists from Nether Providence Elementary School represented the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District at the Annual PMEA District 12 String Fest. The event was hosted by The Westtown School and directed by Danielle Garrett, assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Sinfonia Players. The participants were Justin Bi and Vedanta Sharma, pictured here with NPE orchestra director, A. Scott Kiehner.

4-22 SRS 1st grade yoga

SRS teacher Jennifer McDonnell (back, left) and her 1st grade class welcomed Next Generation Yoga owner Devon Laudenslager and SRS Principal Angela Tuck (back, middle and right) to their classroom last week for a session of stretching, relaxation and fitness activities. Devon (who is also children’s program coordinator at the Swarthmore Public Library) donated the yoga session as a prize for the SRS Bingo Night. Kathryn Barrett won it to share with her classmates in Mrs. McDonnell’s homeroom.
