High School Principal to Leave Strath Haven

SHHS Principal Kristopher Brown

SHHS Principal Kristopher Brown

Strath Haven High School Principal Kristopher Brown will be the next District Equity Officer of Abington Township. “This is a very unique opportunity to do work that I am incredibly passionate about in the community I grew up in and the school where my passion to become an educator was born,” Brown wrote in a letter to parents. “It has truly been a fantastic opportunity for me to work in this community, and I am better for having had the chance to be here and work to continue to provide a great experience for the students and the Wallingford-Swarthmore community.”

The Strath Haven students whose lives Brown has touched appreciate him too. Here’s a sampling of their comments:

“Dr. Brown makes a constant effort to connect with as many students as possible. His encouraging attitude and willingness to have conversations about different issues the community faces allow him to be a great leader. He has inspired positive change at Strath Haven that will remain for years to come.”  — Mira Patel, grade 11

“Dr. Brown is a leader who is willing to recognize flaws within our school community and address them in a productive and inspiring manner. His work on identifying how race and class impact our academic success is the beginning of a more inclusive and academically enriching district for everyone at Strath Haven High School.”  — Elia Brooks-Sims, grade 11

“Dr. Brown made positive changes and contributions to the school throughout his tenure. Whether it was doing interviews for the school newspaper, helping to procure funds for a new pingpong table, or helping to organize the town hall [meeting] with Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, he has always been enthusiastic about helping better our school and the experiences students have while here.”  — Luke Mandel, grade 12

“I am very grateful for the time Dr. Brown was principal at Strath Haven. For a long time, I felt as though my concerns as a minority in this school district weren’t being heard. But when Dr. Brown brought in a researcher who ran focus groups about the school’s social climate, I finally felt like my experiences and opinions truly did matter. His dedication was apparent, from his Friday morning music to his willingness to hear any student’s plans to make Strath Haven a better place.”  — Alise Mackey, grade 12

In his new position in the Abington School District, Brown will work on recruitment, retention, professional development, and curricular issues related to promoting achievement within a diverse student body.

Brown will continue as SHHS principal until late January.
