After years of effort and legal wrangling, the Swarthmore Co-op sold its first bottles of beer and wine on Tuesday.

Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge Barry Dozor declared 19th-century deed restrictions prohibiting the sale of alcohol in certain parts of downtown Swarthmore “unenforceable, released, and extinguished.”

“Thanks to all of those who worked so hard to get us here,” said Co-op Board President Donna Francher, who made the store’s first purchase, a bottle of Moët & Chandon Champagne. “Time to celebrate!”
