Not all can afford to serve

To the Editor:

With all due respect to Don Delson whose voluntary, unpaid service to Swarthmore has been extraordinary — voluntary, unpaid service is a luxury many are unable to afford.

Whether from loss of a job and inability to be rehired because of age, racial or ethnic background, gender or some other aspect; care for an elder or family member that used to take place in hospitals; the time constraints of needing to work two or three jobs; or the limitations of a senior’s fixed income, isn’t it possible that a small-to-moderate payment for direct service to one’s community could enable a broader range of residents to experience the joy that Mr. Delson describes and contribute to their community at the same time?
