Debating two alternatives

The way I see it, the current debate about the Covanta incinerator in Chester is skewed, warped, and hysterical. We’re debating between two alternatives: dirty air (bad) and too much trash (also bad), and we’re being asked to decide which is the least bad. But they’re both awful. It’s ridiculous to suggest that the problem can be solved by simply shutting down the incinerator, because that would produce a mountain of trash that we would then have to deal with. There’s no avoiding this: the slogan zero waste makes zero sense.) What we need instead is serious thinking that results in realistic solutions to both problems simultaneously. I have yet to see such thinking take place. But we can do it if we get our heads out of the clouds. Surely there are some smart people out there who can work this out.
