James L. Marshall

James L. Marshall of Crosslands, Kennett Square, formerly of Swarthmore, died on May 6. He was 93. 

The son of Harold F. Marshall and Lea Gireud, Jim grew up in Palmyra, New Jersey, studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and married Maud Wells, with whom he raised two children. He taught electrical engineering at Villanova University for most of his career.

Jim had a life-long interest in music. He played jazz piano and trumpet in high school and later took up the cello, becoming an avid string quartet player and composer of chamber music and choral works. Another of his enduring interests was the critical study of technology and society. He enjoyed poetry, art, and nature, frequently hiking and vacationing in the Adirondack Mountains.

Predeceased by his wife Maud, he is survived by his second wife, Bunty (Barbara Barus), daughter Pam Lebeaux (David) of Silver Spring, Maryland, son David Marshall (Cynthia) of Wallingford, three grandsons, and a great-grandson. While no service is planned, donations in Jim’s honor may be made to the Council for a Livable World, livableworld.org, or the Parkinson’s Foundation, parkinson.org.
