Unscientific Survey: Where Do You Get Your Bottles?

Unscientific Survey: Where Do You Get Your Bottles?

As previously noted, the local wine-buying options have significantly opened up recently, hence our Unscientific Survey asking where you procure your vino. For picking up a bottle or two, a plurality of respondents said they head out of state. (We didn’t specify where out of state; for two options, see the comments below.)

But putting a local spin on the question, that number gets beaten when we combine those who favor the recently licensed Co-op (20%) and small purveyors like Village Vine and 320 Market Café (11%). Presumably, those numbers will rise when people get acquainted with the offerings at these places.

For buying six bottles or more (not allowed in the Co-op, supermarkets, and small Pennsylvania outlets) it was a pretty close three-way race, with mail-order defeating out-of-state retailers and Fine Wine & Spirits outlets.

Here are some reader comments:

  • “Trending heavily toward Co-op, 320, and Village Vine since they have emerged on the market and enjoying wine buying more than ever. Great options without much markup vs. state stores, and the benefits of easy shopping and supporting a local business. Plus, Village Vine and 320 put good effort into their offering, with 320 also aiming to educate buyers on the Who and the What behind their selections via their newsletters and social feeds.” —Matt P.

  • “We need a store like Total Wine and Spirits in this county! This Wilmington store is the largest of its kind in the country. Fortunately, it is just a short drive down to Wilmington.”

  • “Love the selection at the Vine.”

  • “From now on Co-op all the way!”

  • “Two words — Trader Joe’s (in Princeton, NJ).”

  • “I stocked up with a case recently, and I’m the only one who enjoys wine in our household, so I don’t have a need yet, but I’m looking forward to doing some browsing and shopping at the Co-op soon!”

  • “It’s nice to have more local choices now. Sorry not sorry, Mr. Biddle!” –Greg

  • “And by ‘wine,’ I’m interpreting that as ‘champagne.’”

Next Unscientific Survey: Sleep

Sleep: Can’t live without it, can’t quite get enough of it. Judging by media reports and conversations with family and friends, the pandemic’s collateral damage has included an assault on shut-eye. True, most of the commuters among us don’t have to be out of the house to beat the morning rush, and kids don’t have to be dressed and out the door for school bright and early every morning, but the new realities haven’t seemed to translate into repose. Bottom line: Stress and anxiety have taken their toll.

We’re interested in how Swarthmorean readers are doing in the sleep department. So please fill out the survey, and we’ll report back in two weeks.
