Longwood Gardens Community Read

Longwood Gardens Community Read

The Longwood Gardens Community Read program is in its eighth year. This year, two book selections explore how one finds a passion for nature, and how that spark can grow. Their featured book is “The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair With Nature,” by J. Drew Lanham. For younger readers, they selected “Ruby’s Birds,” by Mya Thompson.

On Thursday, April 29, at 4 p.m. the Swarthmore Public Library will host a virtual program centered on the youth selection: a discussion of “Ruby’s Birds,” led by representatives from the Delaware Museum of Natural History. Participants will get to meet some local animals and play some games. For more information: swat.ink/spl-longwood.

On Monday, May 3, from 7 to 8 p.m., the Helen Kate Furness Free Library will host a discussion of “The Home Place,” a memoir about race, nature, and the American landscape. Copies of both books are available through the Delaware County Library System. Participants will be entered to win a voucher to Longwood Gardens that is valid for up to four free general-admission tickets. More information.
