Covanta fumes are not so easily fixed

To the Editor:

Would that life were as simple as was suggested by the letter writer from Rutledge (March 19), regarding the toxic fumes from Covanta’s incinerator in Chester. Just use available technology, he says. Wonder why nobody has thought of that, in all the decades that the smoke coming out of that incinerator has been causing horrendous health problems. Could it be that Covanta really has no stake in cutting back on the pollution from the largest such operation anywhere with little if any of the technology which might help reduce the toxicity? 

As for “more trucks rumbling through Chester,” if our city stopped being the destination for trash from all over Delaware County, the City of Philadelphia, and points as far away as New York City, then, in point of fact, the trash truck traffic would be notably less. 

By the way, toxic fumes are no respecter of city borders. So maybe Rutledge gets a share of the toxic fallout, too.
