Swarthmore Police Department Report - October 10-28

October 10-28, 2019

The Swarthmore Borough Police Department has recently acquired a new speed timing device. As previously discussed at Borough Council, the department received its new “E.N.R.A.D.D” (Electronic Non-Radar Device). All officers have been trained in the new piece of equipment, and it is now operational. Residents should expect to see the department utilizing this equipment in its continuing effort to reduce speeding violations throughout the borough.

Accidents

  • On October 10 at 7 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of N. Chester Rd. near Swarthmore Ave., where they found an unconscious male inside a pickup truck. Police were able to wake up the individual, and after determining the vehicle smelled strongly of an alcohol, performed several field sobriety tests, which the driver was unable to complete properly. The preliminary breath test gave a reading of .209% BAC. The operator was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

  • On October 16 at 3:18 p.m., officers investigated a motor vehicle crash, with reported injuries on the 100 block of S. Chester Road. Two children, who complained of pain, were checked by paramedics, but did not require further medical attention. It was determined that as both cars traveled north on S. Chester Rd., one slowed to a stop and was struck in the rear bumper by the car directly behind, which slid on the roadway in the heavy rain that was falling at the time.

  • On October 19 and 25 in the 8 a.m. hour, officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Chester Rd. and Yale Ave. for a motor vehicle crashes. One was caused by a driver northbound in Chester Road running a solid red light. Another was a case of a motorist rear-ending a stopped car. There were no injuries.

  • On October 20 at 4:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Yale and Cornell avenues for a motor vehicle crash with no injuries reported. A vehicle traveling east on Yale Ave. was about to cross the intersection of Cornell Ave, when a car that was traveling north on Cornell Ave. stopped but then pulled out, striking the other car.
