Accidents
On August 26, at 4:49 p.m., police responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in the 400 block of Dartmouth Avenue, near Lincoln Way. The crash involved an unoccupied vehicle and no injuries were reported. When the police arrived, it was determined that the car had been parked in the borough hall parking lot; the driver had failed to engage the car’s emergency brake; as a result, the car had rolled out of the parking space and into the outdoor eating parklets at Aria restaurant. The car sustained minor damage and was able to be driven from the scene. Minor damage to the parklets was noted.
On September 1, at 3 p.m., police responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in the SEPTA parking lot off North Chester Road. The two cars involved were in the parking lot, and the cars’ occupants were uninjured. It was determined that one car had attempted to pull into a parking space and had struck a parked car. The damage to both cars was minor, and neither car required towing.
On September 4, at 2:06 p.m., police responded a report of a motor vehicle crash involving two cars at the intersection of Park and Myers avenues. It was determined that no injuries had occurred, and that the damage to both cars was minor. After the investigation, it was determined that one car had been traveling north in the unit block of Park Avenue, when a second car pulled out from a parking space, striking the passenger side of the passing car. Both cars were able to be driven from the scene.
On September 2, at 5:04 p.m., police responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle crash on North Chester Road near the SEPTA parking lot. Police determined that both cars involved had been traveling south on North Chester Road, approaching the SEPTA parking lot. The lead car had stopped at the pedestrian crosswalk to yield to a subject who was crossing the roadway. The following car had failed to stop in time, and struck the rear bumper of the lead car. Both cars sustained minor damage and were driven from the scene.
Motorists! School’s open: drive carefully!
September 9 was the first day of the new school year for district public schools. The Swarthmore Police Department will be performing numerous speed monitoring checks on different roadways throughout Swarthmore and Rutledge boroughs. Traffic citations will be issued for violations of Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code Section #3362 (“Maximum Speed Limits”). Speeding citations impose fines, the cost of which increase with higher speeds, and PennDOT-assessed “points” on the operator’s license. Motorists are reminded that speeding raises the chances of being involved in a motor vehicle crash, and increases the potential for injuries and property damage.
Service alarms
Calls included false burglar alarms, fire alarms, and panic alarms.
Medical emergencies
Officers assisted medics and the Swarthmore Ambulance Service in response to a variety of medical calls.
