Report from the Fire Company August 26 - September 8

Firefighters responded to an alarm on the 400 block of Wallingford Ave. on Sunday, Sept 8., at 11:57 a.m. for an oven fire with possible extension into the wall. Apparatus from Garden City, Swarthmore and Media responded to the incident. The fire was limited to an electrical enclosure without spread to the rest of the dwelling. Fire extension into a wall or fire in a wall cavity has the potential to spread almost unchecked through the building and is often difficult to completely locate and extinguish. From August 26 through September 8, 2019, the Swarthmore Fire & Protective Association responded to the following alarms:

EMS

The ambulance responded to 34 calls for medical assistance. These were to Swarthmore, Rutledge, Morton, Springfield, Ridley Twp., and Nether Providence Twp. The calls were for a variety of emergencies including: fall with trauma, respiratory difficulty, cardiac emergency, accident with injury, medical alarm, unconscious person, cerebro vascular event, abdominal pain, lifting assist, back pain, tachycardia, head injury, pediatric emergency, injured person, seizures, subject down, extremity pain, other BLS emergency, and congestive heart failure.

Automatic Fire Alarm

One each in Nether Providence Twp. on the 200 block of S. Providence Rd. for a general fire alarm, and at Swarthmore College for an automatic fire alarm near the bell tower.

Building

One alarm in Nether Providence Twp. on the 200 block of Wallingford Ave. for an oven fire with possible extension to the wall.

Hazmat

Three alarms in Morton: at Baltimore Pike & Leamy Ave. for fuel on the highway; at Maple St. and Woodland Ave. for fuel leaking from a vehicle; and on the 400 block of Highland Ave. for a carbon monoxide alarm activation. One alarm in Springfield Twp., on the 300 block of Gleaves Rd. for an odor of natural gas inside.
